Artist statement
Art has been the center focus of my life and certainly my major interest and joy. Born into an immigrant family, refugees from Nazi Germany, my parents were eager to explore this new land, America. We often went to museums and early on I enrolled in art school. My learning continues through college and two years at The Art Students League in New York. Entwined with my interest in art, were studies in architecture, design and the behavioral sciences. This has had a major impact on the imagery I pursued. My hand is steady, a product of drafting which has an effect on my drawings. My interest and studies in the behavioral sciences has provided a more in-depth understanding of human behavior. My studies culminated with an M.F.A. degree in painting and drawing at Brooklyn College, CUNY, studying with major painters such as Lennart Anderson, Lois Dodd, Lee Bontecou and Phillip Pearlstein. Brooklyn College was a good fit for me as its focus was realist painting.
My work follows the spirit of some of the great landscape painters of all time. I am a mid-career artist who has always been fascinated with the natural and built landscape. I enjoy the plein- air painting process, carrying around my French easel outside and setting up even on the coldest of days. I am attracted to rural and seaside scenes.
Over the years, due to my background in architectural design, I have completed a series of paintings about the built environment. These include one group of paintings which focused on building stairwells, another portrayed halls in old buildings. These series took the viewer into old tenement buildings, a trip back into time, perhaps a place that their ancestors inhabited.
I have attended a number of artist residencies throughout the years. These uninterrupted periods have proven productive allowing me to focus on my work. The subject may be mountains, the valleys or the skies. Work in the studio might focus on architectural themes. It is always a joy to work amongst other artists and writers. Friendships develop, ideas are shared and a spirit of collegiality fills the air.
Thank you.
